Biomedical

In the Biomedical AI Lab, students explore how artificial intelligence can provide new insight into biological systems and open up entirely new possibilities in medicine and biotechnology. Through hands-on projects, they learn to combine machine learning and other technologies with an understanding of living systems, disease and treatment.

Our work ranges from medical image analysis and treatment response prediction to the development of novel electronics and experiments with living neural networks. Our ambition is to give students the opportunity to work at the forefront of research, on problems where much remains unexplored and where good ideas can genuinely lead to something new. The lab is built around interdisciplinary teams and real-world challenges from research and healthcare.

In collaboration with research groups, hospitals and industry, students develop models and prototypes, conduct experiments and test their own solutions in practice. This lets them follow the entire journey from idea and theory to data, models, hardware, experiments and results. Together with the Flobak Lab at St. Olav’s Hospital, we use patient-derived tumoroids grown from cancer biopsies as a biological testbed, and develop machine learning models to predict which treatment is most likely to be effective. With Oslo University Hospital, we are working on automated analysis of CT images for opportunistic screening of abdominal aortic aneurysms, a condition that is often asymptomatic but potentially life-threatening. In Neurochip, we interface living neurons with custom-designed microchips and electronics, and explore how far biological neural networks can be developed into systems capable of learning and information processing. Among other things, we investigate how cellular architecture, three-dimensional neural networks, stimulation and memory mechanisms can be harnessed to solve tasks currently handled by artificial intelligence.

The Biomedical AI Lab aims to be a place where students from different disciplines learn from one another, take responsibility for ambitious projects, and carry ideas all the way from early concept to experiment and result. Our goal is to create an environment where you don’t just learn about the medicine and technology of the future, but help develop it.
